SYA Celebrates 50th Year!

SYA Celebrates 50th Year!

Did you know? SYA celebrates 50 years of serving youth and families in 2023! We were established in November of 1973 with 350 participants. Today, SYA serves over 13,000 children ages 4-19, and over 5,000 families in Centreville and Clifton, Virginia as well as some surrounding locations.  SYA serves the community as a non-profit, led by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. The directors along with thousands of other volunteers are dedicated to providing the children of Southwestern Fairfax County with a safe and positive environment through sports competition. The strong volunteer base supports SYA, enabling us to provide hundreds of youth with scholarships.

Why are there so many cancelations during the season?

One of our most frequently asked questions...

Why are there so many cancelations during the season?

SYA is an independent non profit youth sports organization. SYA is provided permits by Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) to utilize school and park gyms and fields. These permits allow us to fully use under the rules and guidance of Fairfax County, their facilities within our area.

SYA is fortunate to also be partners with certain schools and facilities, have adoption agreements and volunteer on several boards within Fairfax County to allow us to have access to some of the best fields/gyms in the area. These efforts by our volunteers also give us Priority Use of certain facilities.

SYA is required to submit requests for field and gym use at the beginning of each season. However, the schools and parks are allowed to cancel those at any time if they have a school or park event. SYA works hard to ensure that we get full use of our permits, unfortunately there are times where we are canceled by the County.

Your Board of Directors has been working tirelessly with the Fairfax County Athletic Council to minimize the disruptions that are caused by last minute cancelations. While we understand when schools are affected by emergencies such as weather, unexpected events, and official shortages, there should be very few last minute cancelations for regular scheduled activities.

If you have additional questions, about cancelations, or other tips, please reach out to us.
