2019-2020 Coach Bios
We are excited to welcome Heather Zapf to SYA Volleyball Club! Heather brings over 15 years of playing and coaching experience to SYA Volleyball Club this season. She played all though her high school career in Yorktown, VA, and went on to play 4 seasons as an outside hitter at Davis & Elkins College (D2). Throughout her college career, she received all-conference and all-tournament honors on multiple occasions, and her Junior year she was listed in the Who's Who Among College Student-Athletes. Post-college she has continued to keep her hands on the ball, playing with various women's leagues and in sand volleyball tournaments in Virginia Beach, winning 15+ tournaments. She has several years of high school and club coaching experience, including coaching 12s, 15s, and 17s with Charlottesville Volleyball Club. Her coaching philosophy can be summarized in three main principles: work ethic, student mentality, and positive attitude. In order to play for Coach Heather, athletes need to be hard workers, demonstrate a strong ability to listen and apply coaching feedback, and exude positivity at all times. Heather continues to play volleyball with adult leagues in Fairfax County, she is IMPACT certified, and she is looking forward to a very competitive club season with SYAVBC!
We are excited to welcome Danielle Ilari back to SYA Volleyball Club! Danielle has been playing volleyball competitively since 4th grade, playing outside hitter and back row. She has eight years of club volleyball experience, with two of those years competing as a member of SYAVBC. She played all four years at Westfield High School, and was the Bulldogs Varsity Captain her senior year. Danielle was named Second Team All-District in her senior year. She went on to play intramural volleyball all throughout college. This is Danielle's first year coaching, and she is really looking forward to another fun and competitive season with SYAVBC!
Corey Gough began playing volleyball in high school, competing in A and AA tournaments. He has been coaching club teams for 8 years, and this will be his 4th season with SYAVBC. In the 2017 season, Corey led 17 Blue to a second-place finish in CHRVA Club Regionals, bringing home gold medals in the Gold Division, as well as silver medals at Monument City Classic, and finished 5th at South Atlantic Championships. In 2018, Corey's 17 Blue team again came in second at Monument City and finished 9th at Capitol Hill Classic. Seven of Corey's players in the 2018 season competed in the 2018 VHSL State Tournament! He is a highly-regarded technical coach, and has also been giving private lessons for six years. When he's not coaching, Corey competes in two adult leagues, locally at the A/BB level, and nationally at the BB level - including earning a gold medal playing right side. Corey is IMPACT certified, and he is looking forward to another competitive season with SYA Volleyball Club.
Brittany Anderson – Assistant Coach, 16 Blue
We are excited to welcome Brittany Anderson to SYA Volleyball Club! Brittany played outside hitter for Ultimate Chicago Volleyball Club throughout her high school career, and was the captain of her volleyball team at Lincoln-Way East High School in her hometown of Frankfort, IL. Brittany went on to play for Davis & Elkins College (D2) as both outside and right side, and was team captain her senior year. She has two seasons of club coaching experience, and her coaching style is very team-oriented, saying it is important to remember that talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships. Brittany is IMPACT certified, and really looking forward to working with her team this season!
Sammy Hogue was an award-winning high school athlete, playing both volleyball and lacrosse for all 4 years at West Springfield High School, earning All-District honors in both sports. At the University of Mary Washington, Sammy was the starting setter for the Eagles, and also played on the UMW rugby team, winning a national championship in women’s rugby. She has multiple seasons of club playing and coaching experience here in the CHRVA region. Sammy absolutely loves coaching volleyball and helping her players be the best they can be, and she is IMPACT certified.
Stephanie Hagen continues to bring her love of volleyball to coaching for SYAVBC, and played for SYA Volleyball and SYAVBC from 2006 – 2010. During those years Stephanie played varsity for her middle school and high school teams as well. At Battlefield High School she was the Varsity Captain, and played libero on Coach K and Coach Lowery’s SYAVBC 16 Blue Crush team which won CHRVA Gold Bracket Regionals in 2009. Stephanie is IMPACT certified, and her philosophy is that physical fitness should be a top priority for her players, and works with her teams to develop the endurance and strength needed to “give it all” for tournaments. Coach Stephanie is IMPACT certified, and this will be her fourth season coaching for SYAVBC.
Elyse Texido – Floater Coach
Elyse has many years of playing and coaching experience, playing since her middle school years in New York. Elyse was the varsity setter for St. Mary's High School in Buffalo, NY and led her team to 3 state championships, and also played for Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club. Elyse went on to play for Mercyhurst University in PA and was named Mercyhurst Athlete of the year (across all sports) in her senior year, as well as PSAC West Defensive Player of the year. Before moving to Northern Virginia, Elyse coached with Club Chill in Erie, PA. This will be Elyse's fifth season with SYA Volleyball Club, and during her SYAVBC career, she has led her teams to top finishes in CHRVA club regionals, and finished her 2018 season ranked #18 out of 61 teams in the CHRVA region. Elyse is IMPACT certified.
