The SYA Elite defeated the Vista Hotshots 2-1 in overtime to become the VYSA U-16 State Cup Champions! The Elite, who are ranked No. 1 in Virginia, will join the SYA Force – the U-16 boys State Cup Champion -- representing Virginia at the regional championship tournament June 30-July 4, 2006.
In the championship game, the Elite once again out shot their opponent 24 to 11 during 110 minutes of soccer. The Elite scored first in the 23rd minute of play when Tiffany Brown powered a ball past the keeper after a corner kick by Diana Weigel. The half ended with the Elite up 1-0. In the 60th minute the Hotshots responded to even the score at 1-1 to force the game into overtime. The team roster was depleted due to illness of defender Larkin Nixon, but the midfield of Sarah Cabrisses, Katie Cramp, Aline Le and Samantha Jorden, controlled the middle and helped create opportunities for forwards Brook Chang, Emily Dale, Tiffany Brown and Natalie Heintz, who launched a relentless attack, putting six shots on goal during the overtime. Three minutes into the second overtime period, on an excellent corner kick by Katie Cramp, Natalie Heintz rose high to score her second winning goal in 2 days.
The performance was a credit to the coaching of Paul Ellis and Mike Jorden
The Elite won their semi-final game against the RFC United by a score of 1-0, and out shot the United 16 shots to 5, but excellent goalkeeping by the United keeper turned aside 6 of the 7 Elite shots.
Congratulations to the Elite players and coaches!
